Slum Saturday

In the heart of Inglewood you'll find...a bunch of nerds peddling their comics? Sure, why not? And maybe in downtown later you'll find some interactive red light art and some Obama impersonators. It's a good Saturday. Cannibal Flower may have been postponed but the night stayed interesting.

Someone has posted something on your wall.

Thanks to Alex Chiu for the top two pics. Nice dude and amazing artist.

Jake & Crash Magazine

I had made some art for Jake and his publication. However, we could not agree on when payment should be made:

nathaniel,

looks good but can I use the original copy instead? I love that raw art. I will pay 2-3 days after I print it. Cool? Thanks!

Sure, you can use the original image. I'd feel more comfortable if payment was sent before it was used though.

If you want, I can give you the original and we can make the exchange in person. Let me know.

Fyi 1296 people read my zine last month over 650 have subscriptions. You obviously don't understand how the art business works bro. Exposure is key plus what kind of artist holds his work up like its merchandise on the shelf?
Just had to enlighten you homeboy.

I think that's really cool that a magazine would try to stay print only in today's digital world. Keeps it more real and "raw" as you had mentioned. I'm glad you're not trying to be a jerk by saying I have little experience and laughing at me. I appreciate that.

Is this your magazine?

So is it a fashion magazine or is it a punk rock magazine? Those don't seem to mix.

Oh, okay. Dude=modern day text lingo. Dude, it's rad of you to differentiate what you have because I was having difficulty discerning it for myself. I don't think music and fashion are linked in any way either. I mean, it's not like the musicians in one genre dress in a similar style to each other and produce similar music either. Kudos on your observation. I hope there's an article about this in your fashion zine.

Best,
Nathaniel

In all my craigslist responses I've never had such an untalented person have such a cliche vocabulary. Kudos? Your like almost amusing (but not really). Go kick rocks picaso

Your observations are even more keen than I thought! Kudos IS part of a pretty cliche vocabulary. Kudos.

Do you need an editor at your fashion zine? I found a few errors in your last email including but not limited to using "your" instead of "you're" and the lack of capitalization and a missing S in Picasso.

Also, there were some confusing statements where you referred to me as "untalented" and then as Picasso. Are you trying to say Picasso was untalented? Furthermore, in one of your initial emails you referred to my work with "this is really good i would like to print it in the sept issue."

As editor, I can help you keep track of these errors and amend them. Let me know if there is an editor position available.

Best,
Nathaniel

Sadly, this exchange did not lead to an editor position. Still looking though.

This Saturday I'm Gonna Do LA So Hard...

More specifically: Inglewood and Downtown LA in that order. Starting at 10 am is the Indy Comic and Art Expo that you should all attend if you like great artists and/or comics that are underrepresented.
Other than that? Ah, yes. Promptly at 9pm I'll be painting, live, or live-painting, at the Cannibal Flower show (tenth anniversary, kids) in downtown, LA. Here's a pic from their last show I was a part of:As I understand it, that's the resident DJ Mr. Onederful posing in front of my piece "I'm A Poet And You Knoet." This time I get to do it live and you'll be able to witness Saturday night at 9pm. New location apparently:

120 N. Santa Fe Ave.
Los Angeles, Ca. - off of 1st Street

Be there. Or don't. But then you won't get my stickers/shirts/art from my hand. My sexy, sexy hand. See you Saturday, LA.

West Coast Warrock

For those of you that weren't aware that there was rapper who read comics, constantly referenced them, is serious about it, and above all else is GOOD at it, feast your ears on his West Coast Avengers Mixtape. Repping the left coast from the right coast is one Adam Warrock. I think this calls for some accompanying art...stay tuned while listening to his tunes.

Don't worry, Adam, I got you.

Shitty Ninja Flicks Ron Marz

No new pics for the tweet-based comic however updates on who has contributed. Among J. Torres of Jinx fame and Current TV's Ben Hoffman, Ron Marz has just joined the roster of contributing professionals on the book, rocking my various socks. Here's a visual treat: it's an ostrich I met.

I once watched a ninja movie that was so awful I decided to remake it in comic book form to do it justice; it had to be told better. Here's some tasty ninja art from that project called The Burn Issue:

And here's some ninja art with some tasty tacos.

Stay posted people. Keep tweeting and keep filling the book with your writing and keep getting your name in the book and keep writing run-on sentences. Time to draw.

The Previous Days in Cell Pic Form

A couple of photos from the adventurous weekend: three parties and getting keys stuck in the car on San Pedro in LA. Air conditioner broke on the way? That's alright. Ride that bitch out and see what the day will show us. Taiko? Sick. A vid from last year but essentially a similar show. Thanks J-Town.

You spelled pupusas wrong, seÑor. I choose the borrito.

A Danny Trejo with Cholula instead of Tapatio is called a Cheech Marin.

Dead kitten. Didn't stand a chance.

Fuck yeah. Richest nerd's car I've ever taken a picture of.

Never been so close. I'm sure you can get closer. Another time deviousness. Another time.

Depression and Rug Burn

So the more real jobs I apply to and the more real jobs that don't call me back the more I'm filled with this disgusting black shit that eats away at my lungs and I gasp for air and start to sweat and think about how I'll never get to accomplish any of the goals I'm setting for myself because art needs to be funded somehow and I say, "Fuck off, Depression. You weren't invited to this party." So I draw something and I feel better and I apply for another real job and the cycle repeats itself. Here's some of that stuff I drew to give me a quick fix. More tiny sketches for the comic's cover. Working on other comics too. Fuck I've got to get off my ass and onto those comics.

Also, decided to give away some free album/cd/poster/cover/whateverthehellyouwant artwork via twitter and craigslist. Rappers don't know how to read directions.

Here's that sexy art I promised. Took prolly ten minutes or thereabouts. Gotta account for time spent staring. The red glow is rug burn.

TwitPic and Dzikonski

Tweets are coming in steadily and the comic is gaining literary cohesion. First visuals in tiny sketch form, folks.

Below is a pic of Rachael Dzikonski as she gets down throwing some clay at the art event at RAM which I sneaked into (not all that difficult) last night. Enjoy the pics of Rachael at the stolen show...

Subject: Re: logo design

Hey Nathaniel,

Thanks for responding to my ad on craigslist. Im still looking for a logo, and basically have a few things to go over before I get into what im looking for. My budget is small, so I can only offer $50 for the logo. I have a few other people that are coming up with their designs as well, and basically i'll be going with the best one. This is for my medical delivery service. I already have the concept i'd like, but I believe it needs to be executed correctly to look good. If you're fine with my budget, and what im looking for then we can go further.

My concept I have is a cookie jar. But I want the cookie jar to be made of marijuana colas (i've attached a picture of a marijuana cola for reference). I would like for it to take shape of a dutch looking cookie jar, with a fabric hemp type name plate over the jar which would have the name of the collective on there. I want this logo to look artsy, but realistic. Definitely not photoshopped realistic where images are cut out, but actually designed. If this is something that you could handle, i'd love to see what you can come up with. Im also open to other ideas, if you think you could make something better that's going to look good, then im open to that.

To: Andrew

Hello Andrew,

I appreciate your interest in my work and your clear appreciation for "a few other people that are coming up with...designs as well." Typically when a business owner wants a logo they will look through an artists/designers portfolio to see their past work and decide whether or not that work is up to par with the design the client needs and if it can be executed properly. If the client feels the artist can do the work, the client will offer a payment to the artist within the client's budget of course and the artist will agree/disagree to do the required work.

In other cases, a company may offer a contest to artists/designers and hold a public voting session for a completed design. The artists involved will have their work seen by the public and gain exposure so they have some incentive for doing the work.

You however have decided to have a bunch of people work for free with nothing to offer in return. The artist who creates the design you choose will get fifty dollars while the rest of the workers receive nothing for their time and efforts. I'd love to compete in your contest but I've got other things to do that don't pay either. Thanks for the time.

Kate Moss Died

Dear Kate Moss,
You're a pretty foxy babe and I don't mean no offense by these ills. More of like homage. They were designed and entered into a contest but they didn't make the cut. But fuck that. I'll make my own contest. Hey, folks, if there's a design below that you dig let me know. I may make me some shirtitudes or a print to release via twitter. Follow me.

Twitter Comic Book

Composing a book with dialogue, text, and direction all written in tweets. Tweet @eyedraugh and get your dialogue, text, or direction in the book along with your name or Twitter handle. Your tweet can be as random or as irrational as you want and I will try to include them all. Movie quotes or proverbs may work well. Haikus and sound effects would be good too. Pretty much anything under 140 characters. I've got my first page done. Start tweeting folks. Suggestions, questions, comments, and complaints are all welcome. I'm steeling myself up to draw some vulgar shit, here.
